PDF won't open on your Mac? Here's how to fix it
Most PDFs that refuse to open on a Mac are incomplete downloads, password protected, still sitting in iCloud, or not really PDFs. Re-download it, check Finder for a cloud icon, and try a second app such as PDF Unlimited, which says exactly what is wrong. If every app fails, ask the sender for a fresh copy.

Download it again
Incomplete downloads are the most common cause. Delete the copy you have, download it again and wait until it has fully finished. For email attachments, save the attachment to your Downloads folder first and open it from there.
Check iCloud Drive
If the file is in iCloud Drive and shows a cloud icon in Finder, it is not on your Mac yet. Control-click it and choose Download Now, then open it.
Try another app
Control-click the file, choose Open With and pick a different app, such as PDF Unlimited or Preview. If one app opens it, the file is fine and the problem is the app.
Read the error message
PDF Unlimited checks the file before opening it and says what it found: the file is empty, it is not a PDF, it is too damaged to open, or it is locked and needs a password.
Enter the password
If the PDF is locked, you need its password. Check the email it came with, or ask the sender. No legitimate app can skip it.
Fix the default app
If double-clicking opens the wrong app, or nothing at all, set a new default. See change the default PDF viewer on Mac.
Ask for a fresh copy
If every app fails on the same file, the file itself is the problem. Ask the sender to export it again.
Is it really a PDF?
A file name ending in .pdf is a label, not a guarantee. Sometimes a website sends back an error page, a login page or a different document type, and your browser still saves it with a .pdf name. Every real PDF starts with a short header that says so. PDF Unlimited checks that header and will tell you plainly when a file has a .pdf name but something else inside.
A file size of zero bytes, visible with Get Info (⌘I) in Finder, means the download never arrived. No app can open an empty file. Download it again.
Damaged files
A PDF can be damaged by an interrupted download, a failing USB stick, or the app that created it. Some apps are more forgiving than others, so it is always worth trying a second one before giving up. If two or three apps all refuse, the file is almost certainly broken. Your best fix is another copy: the original attachment, a fresh download or a new export from the sender.
Password-protected PDFs
Bank statements, payslips and tax documents often come with an open password. A protected PDF opens to a password prompt rather than the page. Look in the original email for the password or a hint about its format, like a date of birth or part of an account number.
Once it opens, you can save a copy without the password, as long as it is your document. See how to remove a password from a PDF.
When it opens but looks wrong
Some problems show up after the file opens:
- Blank or garbled pages can mean the PDF relies on fonts that were not embedded. Try a different app, or ask for a version with fonts embedded.
- Very large scans can be slow to open, especially from a network drive. Copy the file to your Mac first, then compress it.
- If you can see text but cannot search or select it, the PDF is a scan. Make it searchable with OCR.
- Pages sideways or upside down? Rotate them and save.

Questions
Why won't my PDF open on my Mac?
Usually the download is incomplete, the file is password protected, it is still in iCloud Drive, or it is not really a PDF. Re-download it and try a second app to narrow it down.
What does "file is damaged and could not be opened" mean?
The app could not read the file's structure. Try another app first. If none can open it, get a fresh copy from the source.
Why do PDF attachments in Mail not open?
Large attachments may not have finished downloading. Save the attachment to your Downloads folder, check its size is not zero, then open it from Finder.
Can I open a PDF without the password?
No. An open password is real encryption, and apps like Preview and PDF Unlimited cannot skip it. Ask the sender for the password or an unprotected copy.
How do I open a PDF in a different app on a Mac?
Control-click the file in Finder, choose Open With, then pick the app. To make the change stick for every PDF, use Get Info and click Change All.
