How to cancel an Adobe subscription without surprise fees

Last updated

Sign in at account.adobe.com, open Plans and payment, choose Manage plan on the plan you want to end, then select Cancel your plan and follow the prompts. Cancel within 14 days of your first order for a full refund. On an annual plan billed monthly, cancelling later can trigger a fee of 50% of what is left.

With PDF Unlimited (free)

  1. Check how you bought it

If you subscribed through Apple, Google or Microsoft, cancel through that store, not Adobe. Adobe's own cancel button only works for plans bought from Adobe.

  2. Find your plan type and dates

Sign in at account.adobe.com and open Plans and payment. Note the plan type (monthly, annual billed monthly, or annual prepaid), your start date, and your renewal date.

  3. Open Manage plan

Choose Manage plan next to the plan you want to cancel. Do this for each plan, including any add-ons.

  4. Select Cancel your plan

Under Available actions, in the End your service section, select Cancel your plan.

  5. Read every screen

Adobe may show offers to stay. Decline them if you want out, and read the fee summary before confirming.

  6. Get proof

Wait for the confirmation email, screenshot the final screen, and check your next statement for any unexpected charge.

Know your plan type first

Adobe's terms treat three kinds of plan differently, and the type decides whether you pay to leave. Per Adobe's US subscription terms:

  • Monthly (month to month): no cancellation fee. After 14 days the current month is not refunded, and service runs to the end of that billing month.
  • Annual, billed monthly: the common one, and the one with the fee. It is a 12-month commitment. Cancel after 14 days and you are charged a lump sum of 50% of your remaining contract obligation. Some places, such as California, have different terms.
  • Annual, prepaid: after 14 days, no refund, and service continues to the end of the term.

The 14-day window

Cancel within 14 days of your initial order and Adobe gives a full refund on all three plan types. If you signed up for something you do not need, this is the cheapest moment to leave. Set a reminder the day you subscribe.

The window is tied to the original order. Do not assume it restarts every year when the plan renews; Adobe's terms describe it against the initial order only.

How to time it near your renewal

On an annual plan billed monthly, the fee is half of what is left on the contract. The less that is left, the smaller the fee. Cancelling in the last month of your term costs far less than cancelling in month three.

The key is to cancel before the renewal date. Find it under Plans and payment and set a reminder a week or two ahead. Adobe's current US terms also say some annual, billed-monthly plans switch to renewing month to month after the first year, which would remove the fee from then on. Terms vary by plan and region, so check the renewal terms shown for your plan rather than assuming.

Switching to a monthly plan instead

If you still need Adobe for a while but want flexibility, a month-to-month plan costs more per month but has no cancellation fee. The cleanest time to switch is at renewal, when no contract is being broken. Switching in the middle of an annual contract may count as cancelling it, so ask Adobe to confirm in writing whether any fee applies before you agree.

Retention offers, chat, and add-ons

During cancellation, Adobe usually shows offers like a discount or free months. Read them carefully. Accepting free months typically keeps your subscription running, so it is a pause, not a cancellation, and billing resumes afterwards.

If the online flow will not let you cancel, or the fee looks wrong, contact Adobe support by chat from Adobe's help site. Be polite, specific, and keep a transcript. Some people report that support agents have reduced or waived fees, but nothing guarantees it. Note that you cannot cancel while a payment is processing or failing; fix the payment issue first.

Check for add-ons too. The AI Assistant for Acrobat is a separate subscription, so cancelling Acrobat does not cancel it. Cancel each plan you see listed.

The FTC and DOJ case, and what to use instead

In June 2024, the US Department of Justice, on behalf of the FTC, sued Adobe, alleging it hid early termination fees on annual paid-monthly plans and made cancelling hard. In March 2026, the DOJ announced a proposed settlement, reported at $150 million including free services for some affected customers. It required court approval, and Adobe denied wrongdoing. Adobe has said it will contact eligible customers, so watch your email if you paid that fee.
