A free Adobe Acrobat alternative for Mac
PDF Unlimited is a free, native Mac app that covers what most people pay Acrobat for: merging and reordering pages, compression, signatures, forms, OCR, password protection and true redaction. There is no subscription, account or telemetry, and it works offline. The one gap: it does not edit existing text yet. Acrobat Pro does.

What most people actually use Acrobat for
Ask around and the list is short. Sign a contract. Fill in a form. Merge a few files. Make one smaller for email. Delete a page. Now and then, hide something sensitive or make a scan searchable. Few people need prepress tools, accessibility audits or enterprise sign-off workflows.
If that list sounds like you, a subscription is a lot to pay for a handful of jobs. PDF Unlimited does all of them, for free, with no account.
Where PDF Unlimited is better
It is a native Mac app built on Apple's PDFKit, so it feels like part of macOS: fast to open, light on battery, and familiar shortcuts like ⌘F and ⌘Z. It never asks you to sign in, never phones home, and never uploads your files. And there is no renewal date to remember, so you will never need our guide on cancelling an Adobe subscription for it.
Where Acrobat Pro is better
Acrobat Pro edits existing text and images in place, so you can retype a paragraph and have it reflow. PDF Unlimited does not do that yet; you add text with text boxes. Acrobat also has deeper tools for print production, accessibility checking, comparing document versions, and certificate-based digital signatures. If your job depends on those, Acrobat Pro is worth paying for.
There is also the odd form built with Adobe-specific XFA technology. Those need Adobe software. The free Acrobat Reader handles them, and you can keep it installed just for that.
Switching takes a minute
Download PDF Unlimited, then set it as your default: select any PDF in the Finder, choose File > Get Info, pick PDF Unlimited under Open With, and click Change All. Your existing PDFs, annotations and form entries open as they are, because everything is saved as standard PDF.
If you are paying for Acrobat and want out, read how to cancel an Adobe subscription first. Timing matters, because annual plans paid monthly can carry an early termination fee.
Your files stay yours
PDF Unlimited has no cloud, no sign-in and no telemetry. It cannot see your documents because they never leave your Mac. For contracts, medical files and financial records, that is the simplest privacy policy there is.
It also has no ads and no watermark, and it will not nag you to upgrade. There is nothing to upgrade to.
What about the free Acrobat Reader?
Acrobat Reader is free and reliable for reading, commenting, filling and signing. The tools people actually go looking for, like combining files, compressing, OCR, redaction and editing, are paid upgrades. PDF Unlimited includes all of those except editing existing text, for free.
If you already rely on Reader for one specific Adobe-only form, keep it. Use PDF Unlimited for everything else.

Questions
What is the best free alternative to Adobe Acrobat for Mac?
For everyday jobs, PDF Unlimited covers merging, compressing, signing, forms, OCR and redaction for free. Preview is good for quick tasks. See our full roundup.
Is there a free version of Adobe Acrobat?
Yes, Acrobat Reader. It reads, comments, fills and signs PDFs. Combining, compressing, OCR, redaction and editing text are paid features.
Can PDF Unlimited edit text like Acrobat Pro?
Not yet. You can add text anywhere with text boxes, but it does not retype the original words in place. If you do that daily, Acrobat Pro or another paid editor is the better tool.
Do I need Acrobat to open PDFs on a Mac?
No. Every Mac opens PDFs in Preview, and PDF Unlimited adds the editing tools most people buy Acrobat for.
Will files I made in Acrobat open in PDF Unlimited?
Yes. PDF is a standard format. Annotations, form fields and signatures from Acrobat display normally. The exception is XFA forms, which only Adobe software fills.
Is PDF Unlimited really free?
Yes. Free forever, with no subscription, account, watermark, ads or telemetry. It runs on macOS 14 or later, on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
